How Nic Shots Work with Shortfill E-Liquids
Shortfill e-liquids are bottles of nicotine-free vape juice sold in larger bottles with extra space left at the top. This space is specifically designed so you can add one or more 10ml nic shots to create your desired nicotine strength. Under UK TPD regulations, nicotine-containing e-liquid can only be sold in bottles of 10ml or less with a maximum strength of 20mg/ml, which is why nic shots exist as a separate product you mix in yourself.
Here's how the standard shortfill bottle sizes work:
- 50ml shortfill – sold in a 60ml bottle with room for 1 nic shot
- 100ml shortfill – sold in a 120ml bottle with room for 2 nic shots
- 150ml shortfill – sold in a 200ml bottle with room for up to 5 nic shots
- 200ml shortfill – sold in a 250ml bottle with room for up to 5 nic shots
The formula is straightforward: (Nic shot strength × Nic shot volume) ÷ Total volume = Final nicotine strength. But rather than reaching for a calculator every time, just use the tables below.
Please note: Our tables show results for adding more nic shots than the bottle's standard capacity. Where a row is marked with ⚠, you'll need to decant your shortfill into a larger empty bottle before adding the extra shots. This is a popular method for vapers who want a stronger nicotine strength from their shortfills.
18mg Freebase Nic Shot Calculator
The 18mg freebase nicotine shot is the most common type of nic shot in the UK. When added to a shortfill, it creates a smooth vaping experience suitable for both MTL and DTL vaping. Freebase nicotine delivers a noticeable throat hit, particularly at higher strengths, making it a popular choice for vapers who enjoy that sensation.

20mg Nic Salt Shot Calculator
Nicotine salt shots are becoming increasingly popular, especially among vapers using pod kits and MTL devices. Nic salt shots deliver nicotine more smoothly than freebase, with less throat hit at higher strengths. This makes them ideal if you prefer a gentler inhale while still getting a satisfying nicotine delivery. If you already enjoy nic salt e-liquids, adding a nic salt shot to your shortfill gives you a similar smooth experience in a larger bottle.

Freebase vs Nic Salt Shots: Which Should You Choose?
Understanding the difference between freebase and nic salt shots helps you pick the right one for your vaping style:
18mg Freebase Nic Shots
Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in e-liquids since vaping began. It provides a more noticeable throat hit, which many ex-smokers find satisfying. Freebase nic shots are unflavoured, so they won't alter the taste of your shortfill. They're the best choice if you use a DTL (direct-to-lung) device or a higher-powered mod, as freebase nicotine vaporises effectively at higher wattages.
20mg Nic Salt Shots
Nicotine salts are processed with benzoic acid to lower the pH level, making them smoother on the throat even at higher strengths. If you use a pod kit or MTL device, nic salt shots can be an excellent choice. Some nic salt shots are also flavoured (such as ice or menthol variants), which can complement or enhance your shortfill's flavour profile. At White Vape Co, we stock a range of nic shot options including 70/30, 50/50, 100% VG, ice shots, and nic salt shots.

How to Add a Nic Shot to Your Shortfill
Mixing a nic shot into your shortfill e-liquid is quick and simple. Here's how to do it in four easy steps:
- Remove the cap and nozzle – Take the cap off your shortfill bottle and carefully remove the nozzle or dripper tip to expose the opening.
- Pour in the nic shot – Squeeze the entire contents of your nic shot into the shortfill bottle. The bottle is designed with enough space for the recommended number of shots.
- Replace the cap and shake well – Put the nozzle and cap back on securely, then give the bottle a really good shake for at least 30 seconds. This ensures the nicotine is evenly distributed throughout the e-liquid.
- Leave to steep (optional) – While you can vape it straight away, leaving the mixed e-liquid to sit for 5–10 minutes after shaking allows the nicotine to fully integrate, giving you a smoother and more consistent vape.
Adding more shots than the bottle allows? If you want a higher nicotine strength (for example, 3 shots in a 50ml for 6.8mg), simply pour your shortfill into a larger empty bottle first, add your nic shots, then shake thoroughly. You can pick up empty bottles from our DIY section or ask in-store.
Safety tip: Always wash your hands after handling nic shots. Nicotine can be absorbed through the skin, so avoid spilling any on yourself. If you do get any on your skin, rinse it off with water immediately.
Choosing the Right VG/PG Ratio for Your Nic Shot
The VG/PG ratio of your nic shot affects both the consistency of your mixed e-liquid and the vaping experience. Here's a quick guide:
- 70/30 VG/PG nic shot – Best for DTL (sub-ohm) vaping. Maintains the thicker consistency of high-VG shortfills, producing bigger clouds with smooth flavour.
- 50/50 VG/PG nic shot – A versatile all-rounder suitable for both MTL and DTL setups. Works well with most shortfill e-liquids.
- 100% VG nic shot – Ideal for vapers with a PG sensitivity. Keeps the e-liquid as smooth as possible with maximum cloud production.
- Ice shot – A menthol-infused nic shot that adds a cooling sensation to any shortfill flavour. Great if you enjoy menthol and ice e-liquids.
What Nicotine Strength Is Right for You?
The right nicotine strength depends on your smoking or vaping habits. Here's a general guide to help you decide how many nic shots to add:
| Smoking Habit | Recommended Strength | How to Achieve It (100ml Shortfill) |
|---|---|---|
| Non-smoker / Social vaper | 0mg | No nic shots – vape the shortfill as-is |
| Light smoker (1–5 per day) | 1.5–3mg | 1–2 × 18mg shots (gives 1.6–3.0mg) |
| Moderate smoker (5–15 per day) | 3–6mg | 2–5 × 18mg shots (gives 3.0–6.0mg)* |
| Heavy smoker (15+ per day) | 6mg+ | Consider ready-made nic salts (10–20mg) or 10ml e-liquids in higher strengths |
*Adding more than 2 shots to a 100ml shortfill requires decanting into a larger bottle.
If you're a heavier smoker looking for a stronger nicotine hit, shortfills with nic shots may not reach the strength you need. In that case, we'd recommend trying nicotine salt e-liquids which are available in 10mg and 20mg strengths, paired with a pod kit for the best experience. Frequently Asked Questions
How many nic shots do I add to a 100ml shortfill?
For a standard 3mg nicotine strength, add 2 × 18mg freebase nic shots or 2 × 20mg nic salt shots (which gives 3.3mg). A 100ml shortfill comes in a 120ml bottle with room for exactly two 10ml nic shots. If you want a stronger result, you can add more shots by decanting into a larger bottle – see our full tables above.
Can I add more nic shots than the bottle has room for?
Yes, but you'll need to pour your shortfill into a larger empty bottle first. For example, adding 3 × 18mg shots to a 50ml shortfill gives you 6.8mg in 80ml of liquid – perfect if you want a stronger vape for MTL use. Just make sure you shake the bottle thoroughly after mixing. Our tables above show the results for every combination.
What's the difference between a nic shot and a nic salt?
A nic shot is a concentrated, usually unflavoured 10ml bottle of nicotine designed to be added to a shortfill. A nic salt e-liquid is a ready-to-vape 10ml bottle that already contains flavour and nicotine in salt form. Nic salt shots also exist – these are nic shots that use nicotine salts instead of freebase nicotine.
Do nic shots change the flavour of my e-liquid?
Standard freebase nic shots are unflavoured and will not noticeably change the taste of your shortfill, though adding multiple shots may slightly dilute the overall flavour intensity. Ice shots will add a cooling menthol sensation, and flavoured nic salt shots may subtly complement your chosen shortfill.
Will adding extra nic shots dilute the flavour?
Yes, each additional nic shot dilutes the flavour slightly because you're increasing the total volume while the amount of flavouring stays the same. Adding 1 shot to a 50ml is barely noticeable, but adding 3 shots (increasing it to 80ml) will result in a milder flavour. If you prefer stronger flavour at higher nicotine levels, ready-made nic salt e-liquids are a better option.
Which devices work best with shortfill e-liquids?
Shortfill e-liquids (typically 70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG) are designed for DTL (direct-to-lung) devices and sub-ohm starter kits. If you use an MTL pod kit, consider a 50/50 shortfill or check out our long fill range and nic salt e-liquids instead. For device recommendations, read our guide to the best vape devices in the UK.
Can I mix freebase and nic salt shots together?
We don't recommend mixing freebase and nic salt shots in the same bottle. The two types of nicotine have different chemical compositions and pH levels, which can affect consistency and taste. Stick with one type for the best results.
How long does mixed e-liquid last?
Once you've added a nic shot to your shortfill, the mixed e-liquid should be used within 6–12 months and stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Make sure the cap is securely fastened to prevent oxidation.
